Nagpur: A 20-year-old youth, identified as Atharva Waghmare, was arrested after his 16-year-old girlfriend was found to be eight months pregnant following a courtship that started on Instagram in September last year. An offence was registered against Waghmare for inducing the minor into a physical relationship by luring her with fake promises of marriage.
Police said the survivor, a student of standard X, visited hotels with Waghmare on numerous occasions. The survivor realised she was pregnant, but Waghmare continued to entice her with marriage proposals. Sources said that the two families even began negotiations on the marriage until Waghmare refused to marry her. The minor’s family then contemplated terminating her pregnancy, but it was not legally and medically permissible.
The kin of the minor’s family then approached Mankapur police station, where an offence was registered against Waghmare.
