World champions South Africa will field a youthful and largely new-look XI for the first Test against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo, with Keshav Maharaj named captain in the absence of regular skipper Temba Bavuma. Maharaj, who is just one wicket away from reaching 200 Test scalps, will also be eyeing a personal milestone as he leads the reigning ICC World Test Championship winners.Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW!With Bavuma ruled out due to a hamstring injury sustained during the WTC Final at Lord’s, the Proteas have opted for a bold transition, introducing several fresh faces for the Zimbabwe tour. Among the headline inclusions is the long-awaited Test debut of young batting sensation Dewald Brevis, who slots in at No. 6 in a side that features six changes from the WTC Final.

Which debutant are you most excited to see in the first Test against Zimbabwe?

Another debutant, 21-year-old Lhuan-dré Pretorius, will bat at No. 5 despite having just seven first-class appearances to his name, while Wiaan Mulder gets a fresh opportunity at No. 3 after a gritty outing in the WTC Final. David Bedingham has been promoted to No. 4 and Kyle Verreynne returns as wicketkeeper at No. 7.

At the top of the order, Tony de Zorzi and Matthew Breetzke will open the innings, while the bowling attack will include Maharaj alongside three seamers – Corbin Bosch, Codi Yusuf and teenage pace prodigy Kwena Maphaka. Yusuf is the third debutant in the XI.This marks a significant shift in South Africa’s Test approach as they begin a new cycle with an eye on grooming the next generation. The series also offers Maharaj an opportunity to etch his name in history as South Africa’s first spinner to reach 200 Test wickets. With only four players from the WTC-winning XI retained, the Test in Bulawayo could well be the start of a new era in South African cricket.
