KOLHAPUR: Satara police on Thursday booked a 31-year-old man from Pune for allegedly impersonating MP Udayanraje Bhonsle and calling up actor Aamir Khan on the pretext of seeking financial help on behalf of an NGO.Police investigations showed that the accused was calling up Khan, posing as Satara MP Bhonsle, seeking financial help for his friend, who ran an NGO. Bhonsle’s personal assistant Pankaj Chavan registered a case against the Pune man.An officer said the accused used to call directly on Khan’s personal phone number. “He introduced himself as the MP and texted the actor. The accused sought financial help from some people who worked for social causes. However, Khan suspected that the caller was not the Satara MP, as he claimed. Khan then called up the MP’s office and discovered the truth,” inspector Sachin Mhetre, of Shahupuri police, Satara, said.Chavan, in his complaint, stated that the accused registered his name as Udayanraje Bhonsle on a caller application to mislead people.On Friday, Bhonsle said, “Aamir Khan is my good friend. Someone trying to use my name for wrong purpose should be punished.”Mhetre said the accused was booked for impersonation, but the crime is bailable. “He has been served a notice. We have sought his presence for investigation. We will wait for him to turn up, and if he fails, we will take further action,” the officer added.
