Karisma Kapoor and Sunjay Kapur’s marriage made headlines in 2003 when the Bollywood star tied the knot with the Delhi-based businessman. However, what looked like a grand fairytale from the outside didn’t seem so smooth behind closed doors. Filmmaker Suneel Darshan, who worked closely with Karisma during her acting career, has now revealed that her marriage was “abrupt” and that she was never truly part of the world she entered. In a conversation with journalist Vickey Lalwani on his YouTube channel, Darshan reflected on Karisma’s personal choices, her bond with Sunjay’s family, and the drastic shift in her life post-marriage.
Darshan said he understood the situation
Speaking about whether he reached out to Karisma after the recent passing of her ex-husband Sunjay Kapur, Darshan responded with genuine empathy. “We’ve exchanged this thing… I’ve known the issue too deeply. Right from the first day, I’ve known exactly,” he said.He also mentioned Karisma’s early connection with Sunjay’s family, sharing that she had been best friends with his sister since childhood. Darshan added thoughtfully, “Some things just need to be buried,” hinting at the emotional complexities Karisma may have faced during the marriage.

Breakup and marriage came suddenly
According to Darshan, both Karisma’s breakup with actor Abhishek Bachchan and her quick marriage to Sunjay came as a surprise to many. “I thought it was an abrupt decision… something had to do with the stars, not film stars — the stars,” he said.He hinted that the decision may have been influenced by the emotional aftermath of her broken engagement. “One didn’t know what it was… she was never seen as a couple with Sanjay before. Some things are destined to happen.”
Karisma wanted a simple home life
Darshan also shared that Karisma had hoped for a peaceful and homely life after her wedding. “She wanted to be a domesticated wife… She wasn’t the kind who wanted to go play golf on a Saturday. She wanted to spend time at home,” he said.Despite her fame, Darshan described her as someone very grounded and kind. “She was a nice girl, a very nice girl like that… it’s very sad.”
He believed she didn’t belong there
When asked whether Karisma Kapoor was treated as a ‘trophy wife’ by Sunjay’s family, Darshan replied frankly. “I think that was where the problem came. That’s what I heard,” he said. “She was placed into a world which was not hers. Delhi has its own culture and she wasn’t fitting into it.”He added that Karisma came from a family of legends but still carried herself with simplicity. Being the granddaughter of Raj Kapoor and one of Bollywood’s top heroines did not make her pretentious. He further added, “She was in this palatial house with endless cars… and it just wasn’t her world.”
