Video showed the moment a mortar shell was destroyed in a controlled explosion on a beach.
Gorleston Coastguard said it was called to help bomb disposal experts safely neutralise the device just north of Lowestoft on the Suffolk-Norfolk border on Thursday.
“The shell had been found inland and brought to the beach. However, unexploded ordnance is often found on our coastline,” it said in a post on social media.
It urged people to call 999 if they spot something on a beach they are unsure about or suspect could be unexploded ordnance, and to not touch or move the object.
