    A drag queen featuring on the new series of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK wanted to pay homage to her hometown, taking inspiration from the Tyne and Wear Metro for one of her looks.

    Sally TM, 27 and from South Shields, said she wanted to “pay tribute to something which has been so instrumental and iconic in the story” of north-east England and wore the yellow-and-black dress when the seventh season aired on BBC Three on 25 September.

    Sally TM began doing drag 10 years ago after she discovered the world of RuPaul’s Drag Race on YouTube.

    From there, she entered a few drag competitions before working her way up to the TV competition.

    Sally TM said she wanted to represent the “kooky” Geordie drag queens

    “It was such a huge honour for me to be able to appear on RuPaul’s Drag Race, which is an iconic show and one that I have always wanted to appear on,” Sally TM said.

    “I’ve lived in South Shields all my life and I always get the Metro to Newcastle to meet friends and get to work.

    “I really love the yellow of the Metro and wanted to pay tribute to something which has been so instrumental and iconic in the story of our region.”

    Speaking about her motivation for going on the show, Sally TM said she wanted to represent “all those Geordie queens who are ingenuities, creative, a bit clowny, and a bit kooky”.

    “I want to showcase that anyone who has an alternative bone in their body can make it on to Drag Race.”

    Sally TM made it through the first week of the competition

    Metro operator Nexus said it was thrilled to provide the inspiration for Sally TM’s look.

    Station delivery manager Lynne Dickinson said Nexus invited the drag queen to the Nexus Learning Centre in South Shields to see a new Metro train and let her film video content for the TV show.

    “We’re over the moon that Sally was inspired by the new Metro trains with her dress for RuPaul’s Drag Race,” Ms Dickinson said.

    Sally TM avoided elimination in week one of the show and will feature in the next episode on Thursday at 21:00 BST.
