A man who died after being struck by a council road sweeper in Leicester has been named locally as Joginder Singh.

On Tuesday Leicestershire Police said a man, who was in his 80s, was hit by the vehicle in Holy Bones on Monday afternoon and died in hospital a few hours later.

A 63-year-old man, arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving, has since been released under investigation.

Joginder has been described as a “calm, loving, caring presence” by members of the Guru Nanak Gurdwara Sahib, where he was a founding member.

Kartar Singh Bring said Joginder was a “calm, loving, caring presence”

Faith leaders said about 150 people visited the Gurdwara on Wednesday morning to pay their respects.

Kartar Singh Bring, a Sikh community spokesperson, said Joginder had been actively involved in the community since the 1960s.

He said Joginder “was just one of those regular features that you’d see in the Gurdwara”.

“Pillars of the community. And Joginder Singh was one of those,” he said.

Jagjit Singh Kular said Leicester had lost “a good person”

Daljit Singh Basra, committee member at the Gurdwara, said the community was “shocked” by the news of Joginder’s death.

And Jagjit Singh Kular, another committee member, added: “He’s a very good friend of ours as well.

“He’s a very intelligent person, and very humble, very polite, and he’s a very educated person as well.

“So, we miss him, all the community misses him as well.”

Emergency services were called to Holy Bones on Monday

Police said it was working with Leicester City Council to establish the circumstances surrounding the death.

Anyone with any information or who may have seen what happened is urged to contact the force.

A Leicester City Council spokesperson said: “Our thoughts and condolences are with this person’s family and loved ones.

“We are co-operating with the police as they carry out their investigation, and it would not be appropriate to comment further at this time.”
