The Mancunian Way has been closed between Princess Road and Chester Road after a fatal crash

A man has been killed while crossing Manchester’s Mancunian Way, with a driver arrested.

The road was completely closed following the incident on the A57 inner ring road at about 12:50 GMT.

Police said the man, aged in his 20s, was walking across a carriageway when he was hit by a Volkswagen Passat, which was merging from a slip road. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A driver aged in his 40s has been arrested on suspicion causing death by careless driving, Greater Manchester Police said.

The road remained closed in both directions between Princess Road and Chester Road, with morning commuters advised to use alternative routes via Trafford Road or Trinity Way.

Anyone who witnessed or may have footage of what happened has been urged to contact police.

Traffic is building on the M62 where two lanes have been closed

Elsewhere, two lanes were closed on the M62 earlier just outside Manchester near the Eccles Interchange following a crash where a car overturned.

National Highways said the lane closures were causing delays of around 20 minutes.
