Girl, 5, hit by firework at village display in Quarndon

A five-year-old girl was treated in hospital after being hit by a firework at a planned display at a venue in Derbyshire.

East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) said the patient was taken to hospital after it was called to a “medical emergency” at Kedleston Country House, in Quarndon, at 19:48 GMT on Tuesday.

Derbyshire Police said the girl was treated for physical injuries that were not believed to be “life-threatening or life changing”.

A spokesperson for Kedleston Country House said despite safety protocols being followed, an “isolated and unforeseen incident occurred during the display”.

Amber Valley Borough Council said it had been working with police to find out what happened and “commence an investigation under health and safety legislation”.

“Firework displays themselves do not require a licence from the council, although some associated activities may do, and our licensing team is also making inquiries to support the investigation,” a spokesperson added.

Kedleston Country House cancelled a planned display on Wednesday.

It said supporting the family involved was “our priority”, adding it took the health and safety of everyone at the event “extremely seriously”.

In a statement, the spokesperson added: “We are aware of a guest who was assessed by the East Midlands Ambulance Service, and we are in direct contact with their family.

“Our thoughts are with everyone affected, and we thank attendees and the emergency services for their swift response and understanding.”
