Snow showers have moved in across the north-east of England from the coast but have not deterred some from taking a dip in the North Sea.

The Met Office has issued a snow and ice warning lasting until 23:59 GMT for heavy snow along with icy patches on untreated roads.

Snow has settled in areas including Northumberland, Newcastle, Sunderland, Redcar and Hartlepool.

Travel is likely to be disrupted, the Met Office warned, with several vehicles already becoming stuck in snow and ice in the North York Moors.

Durham Constabulary said Fillpoke Lane between High Hesleden and the A1086 Coast Road at Crimdon was closed because of the weather conditions.

Another yellow warning is in place for Monday in the North East from 00:00 until 23:59.

Snow and ice have the potential to cause disruption to travel in places on Monday, particularly during the morning, the Met Office said.

A number of yellow weather warnings for snow and ice are in place across the UK, with several amber snow warnings for northern Scotland and Shetland.

Met Office chief meteorologist Rebekah Hicks said: “Arctic air and brisk northerly winds are gripping the UK as we start the new year.

“Bitterly cold conditions will persist through the weekend and into next week, with daytime temperatures struggling to rise above freezing for some, and overnight lows dipping to minus double figures in places.”

The UK Health Security Agency has issued warnings across England which are in place until 10:00 on 9 January with the weather expected to have a severe impact on health and social care services.

The alert includes the North East, North West, East Midlands, West Midlands, South East, South West, East of England, Yorkshire and the Humber, and London.
