South African allrounder Beyers Swanepoel’s proposed stint with Worcestershire has been thrown into uncertainty after he left his domestic side, the Lions, mid-match during a one-day cup final, triggering an investigation by Cricket South Africa (CSA).Swanepoel had played a key role in the final, picking up 3/44, before unexpectedly walking off the field with eight overs still remaining in the game. His sudden departure, reportedly to catch a flight to the United Kingdom for his county stint, left the Lions a player short at a crucial stage. Forced to continue with just ten players, the team went on to suffer a narrow defeat, intensifying scrutiny over his actions. The incident has not gone down well within the Lions camp, with team management expressing disappointment and terming the move as contrary to team values and professionalism.

    NOC Under Review

CSA has since launched an inquiry into the matter, and Swanepoel’s No-Objection Certificate (NOC), a mandatory requirement for participation in overseas leagues, remains unsigned. “We are investigating the matter and following protocol as per NOC regulation. We will advise everyone accordingly on the way forward once the investigation is concluded within 48 hours,” Eddie Khoza, CSA executive, domestic cricket, told ESPNcricinfo.

    County Future Hangs in Balance

Swanepoel, who is uncapped internationally, signed a one-year red-ball contract with Worcestershire in December, having previously played for Kent. Worcestershire said that they were “aware of the reports” ahead of Swanepoel’s arrival for the start of the Championship. “We are in the process of establishing the full facts and, while that is ongoing, it would be inappropriate to comment further,” the club said in a statement. The Lions were unaware of Beyers Swanepoel’s overseas deal until he walked off the field during the match. By that stage, Swanepoel, who typically bowls at the death, had already completed his full quota of 10 overs, as the Lions were attempting to break a 78-run sixth-wicket partnership between Keegan Petersen and Duan Jansen. Having helped reduce the Titans to 121/5 in their chase of 249, Swanepoel was unable to make further breakthroughs before leaving the field.Initially, players and officials from both sides assumed he had picked up a minor injury. The Lions even brought on a substitute fielder temporarily, but a query from the Titans regarding Swanepoel’s absence revealed that he had actually left the ground. By then, he had returned to the dugout, said his goodbyes to teammates, and departed for the airport to catch a 7:30 pm flight from Johannesburg.Once it was confirmed that Swanepoel was no longer at the venue, the Lions were not permitted a substitute fielder for the remainder of the match, as his absence was not injury-related. Reduced to 10 players, they ultimately lost the game on the penultimate ball.

What Action Will Lions Take Against Swanepoel?

Jono Leaf-Wright, the Lions chief executive, said he’s extremely disappointed at Swanepoel’s actions with ESPNcricinfo reporting that there’s a possibility of the team terminating his contract.“I am extremely disappointed in Beyers. His actions go completely against the culture and values of the team which we have worked to build for the last six years. He has let the union and the fans down,” Leaf-Wright told ESPNcricinfo. “He has let the union and the fans down.”
