Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah achieved multiple milestones during the ongoing first Test match against England at Headingley Cricket Ground in Leeds, becoming the pace bowler with the most five-wicket hauls in World Test Championship history and the first Asian player to claim 150 Test wickets in SENA countries.Bumrah’s exceptional bowling performance of 5/83 against England marked his 11th five-wicket haul in WTC history, surpassing Australian captain Pat Cummins, who held the previous record with 10 five-wicket hauls. The Indian pacer has now equaled the overall record for most five-wicket hauls in WTC history, joining former teammate Ravichandran Ashwin who also has 11 five-wicket hauls to his name in the competition. In the current match scenario, India gained a 6-run lead after restricting England to 465, largely due to Bumrah’s bowling prowess while other bowlers struggled to match his effectiveness.

India’s Day 3 Test Review: Cloudy skies ahead | Weather twist at Headingley

Bumrah’s achievement in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia) is particularly noteworthy as he became the first Asian player to reach 150 Test wickets in these nations, surpassing Paistani legend Wasim Akram’s record of 146 wickets. The accomplishment also places Bumrah among an elite group of Asian bowlers, becoming only the third from the continent to secure 10 five-wicket hauls in Test matches in SENA countries, joining the ranks of Wasim Akram and Lasith Malinga. Quiz: Who’s that IPL player? In the current WTC standings for pacers with the most five-wicket hauls, Bumrah leads with 11, followed by Pat Cummins with 10, Kagiso Rabada with 8, and Josh Hazlewood and Tim Southee with 6 each. The overall WTC rankings for bowlers with the most five-wicket hauls show Bumrah and Ashwin sharing the top spot with 11 each, followed by Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon with 10 each, while Kagiso Rabada and Prabhath Jayasuriya have 8 apiece. Bumrah’s consistent performance in challenging overseas conditions has established him as one of the premier fast bowlers in contemporary Test cricket, particularly evident in his success across SENA nations. His latest five-wicket haul not only helped India maintain competitive position in the ongoing Test match but also added several significant records to his growing list of achievements in international cricket. These accomplishments highlight Bumrah’s evolution as a Test bowler, particularly in conditions traditionally considered challenging for Asian pacers, as reflected in his record-breaking performances in SENA countries. The current Test match at Headingley continues with India batting in their third innings, with Bumrah’s bowling performance playing a crucial role in keeping India competitive in the first match of the five-Test series.
