3 foods that can improve kidney function
Dr. Eric Berg suggests incorporating cucumbers for hydration to flush out waste. Lemons, rich in Vitamin C and citrate, reduce kidney stone risk and lower uric acid. Parsley’s antioxidant properties combat oxidative stress, improve renal function, and potentially prevent kidney-related disorders, according to studies.

The kidneys play a vital role in our body, filtering waste from the blood. Keeping the kidneys in top shape is crucial for our overall health and wellness. What we eat has a significant impact on kidney health. Dr. Eric Berg, a chiropractor and nutrition author, has now shared three foods that can improve kidney function. Let’s take a closer look.

    Cucumbers

    Cucumber (1g fibre per 100g)

Keeping the body hydrated is crucial for kidney health. Dr. Berg suggests incorporating cucumbers into the diet. Cucumbers have 95% water content, which means they provide additional hydration. This water content can help in flushing out waste products from the kidneys, like creatinine and uric acid. Among the other water-rich vegetables, cucumbers are one of the lowest in calories. This means you can munch as many, without worrying about your weight loss goals. You can add them to salads or prepare cucumber-infused water to improve hydration.

6 Home remedies to get rid of bad breath

    Lemon

Lemon is good for the heart

Second on the list is lemon. Yes, when life gives you lemons, make lemonade and boost your kidney function. The high Vitamin C and citrate content in lemon plays a significant role in reducing the risk of kidney stones. Studies have shown that drinking half a cup of lemon juice concentrate diluted in water each day, or the juice of two lemons, can increase urine citrate and likely reduce the risk of kidney stones. Squeezing fresh lemon juice into water or tea is a simple way to harness these benefits. Regular consumption may also help to lower uric acid levels, which can contribute to kidney strain when elevated.

    Poll

Which food do you believe is best for kidney health?

    Parsley

    parsley

Yes, that’s right. This humble herb has protective effects on the kidneys. The antioxidant properties of parsley help reduce oxidative stress, which is crucial when it comes to kidney diseases. Parsley contains several flavonoids, such as apigenin, luteolin, and quercetin. These compounds are known for their potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. A 2024 study found that parsley can reduce oxidative stress, improve metabolic biomarkers, enhance renal function, and inhibit the growth of various bacterial and fungal strains. This herb also has potential in preventing and managing kidney-related disorders, infections, and other chronic conditions associated with oxidative damage and inflammation. Another 2017 study in rats with kidney stones found that those treated with parsley had decreased urinary calcium and protein excretion. An increased urinary pH and urination were also reported in the rats fed with parsley.
