The knitted tea party display appeared in Fillongley

A knitted street party table display with veterans, children and food has appeared in a Warwickshire village to celebrate VE Day.

Heather Badham, alongside her knitting group, Knit and Knatter, had been planning to create the life-size creation in Fillongley for four months.

Social media groups have been a hive of activity reacting to the street party scene, something that Ms Badham said made it worth it.

“One of the posts has got over 10,000 likes, 1,600 comments and 1,100 shares, it’s absolutely amazing and the comments are from all over the world,” she said.

“If you can knit, you probably appreciate more the amount of work it’s taken.”

The knitted display features returning veterans and children enjoying a meal round a table, including wool ham sandwiches, scotch eggs and cakes.

The knitting group started the project in December last year

“We started knitting just after Christmas, and let me tell you it took some time,” she joked.

“Some of the stuff on display we actually did for D-Day last year and we’ve reused it because that’s a sustainable thing to do.”

Members of the group taught children how to knit and crochet, with their contributions also featuring on the creation.

“Some of the ladies have been going into Bournebrook School teaching the children to knit and crochet, and some of the food has been made by the children.

“It’s amazing, we’ve knitted their heads, hair, clothes and the table cloth runner.

“The only thing that hasn’t been knitted is the table and table cloth,” she said.
