Loose dog stops M6 traffic at Birmingham’s Spaghetti Junction

Traffic was stopped on a motorway in the early hours of the morning due to a dog that was loose on the road, the highways service said.

Vehicles were halted in both directions on the M6 in Birmingham between Junctions 5 and 6, National Highways: West Midlands posted on social media site X just before 05:45 BST on Wednesday.

The service then posted 45 minutes later to say all lanes were reopened.

Junction 6 is affectionately known as Spaghetti Junction as it has several roads spread across different levels.

BBC Radio WM presenter Sarah Julian saw the stranded dog while driving to work at about 04:45, as she was going from Spaghetti Junction to the A38 Aston Expressway.

“It was a section [of the road] that’s really fast, everyone’s just pelting past, there’s no place to stop,” she said.

“And there’s a dog just standing there by the side, looking really bewildered, scared, confused.”

She added she had pulled in further along the road and alerted someone from the highways service. She also saw police coming to the scene before she left.

National Highways said the animal had been “safely collected” and had left the scene by the time lanes reopened.
