M11 driver died when lorry ‘breached’ central barrier in Essex

A man was killed when a lorry “breached the central reservation” on a motorway and struck his vehicle, an inquest heard.

Luke Cusack suffered fatal head injuries in the collision on the M11 in Essex, the coroner’s court was told.

It happened as the 21-year-old, from Loughton, was driving near Great Hallingbury, south of London Stansted Airport, at about 14:30 BST on 16 June.

The lorry driver, 57, was arrested on suspicion of causing both Mr Cusack’s death and seriously injuring another man by dangerous driving.

He was later released on bail.

National Highways previously said the HGV “overturned” in what became a three-vehicle collision.

Police shut the M11 in both directions for 12 hours between the airport and Harlow as crews repaired damage to the road.

The second man was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries after the collision.

The BBC asked Essex Police to provide an update on his condition.

Opening an inquest into Mr Cusack’s death, area coroner Michelle Brown said: “He was travelling southbound on the M11 when a vehicle on the northbound track breached the central reservation and struck his vehicle.

“He sustained significant injuries and his death was sadly confirmed by a paramedic at 15:06.”

Ms Brown adjourned the inquest while police continued their investigation into the lorry driver.

Officers have appealed for anyone with information or dashcam footage to come forward.
