Road users are facing delays after the M23 was closed on the approach to Gatwick Airport.
The motorway remains closed southbound between junction 8 (M25) and junction 9 (Gatwick) and will remain so for “several further hours”, National Highways said.
Traffic had been held in both directions from about 07:00 BST but the northbound carriageway was reopened just after 08:00.
National Highways said the closure was due to a “police-led incident”, diversions were in place, and that motorists should expect delays of 30 minutes.
Surrey Police said: “Officers are still on scene, and the road is currently closed southbound.”
A London Gatwick spokesperson said: “Passengers driving to London Gatwick are advised to leave more to time to reach the airport this morning… Diversions are in place.”
National Highways said: “If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time.
“Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey.”
A diversion route is available here.
