The M6 motorway is closed southbound in Staffordshire after a pedestrian was hit by van.
A man found in a potentially life-threatening condition was taken to Royal Stoke University Hospital following the collision between junction 13, for Stafford, and 12, for Cannock, the ambulance service said.
The carriageway was shut at about 00:10 GMT, National Highways said, adding at about 08:15 that there were delays of two hours for drivers on the approach, along with delays on the A449 diversion.
The M6 was also closed southbound overnight between junction 12 and 10, for planned roadworks, although that section has since reopened.
