BHIWANDI: A massive fire broke out in a ground-plus-four-storey building in Bhiwandi on Saturday morning. The building housed godowns storing plywood, clothes, and footwear.
The blaze was so massive that fire department vehicles have been trying to extinguish it for almost nine hours, but it is still not under control.
While fighting the fire, a fire department employee was also injured.
Due to the intensity of the fire, the top two floors of the building collapsed. Despite this, the fire continues to rage, and efforts to extinguish it are ongoing.
To tackle the blaze, multiple fire vehicles from Bhiwandi, Kalyan, and Thane rushed to the spot and are working to control the fire. The fire broke out in a godown located in the Mani Surat complex in Bhiwandi at 3.25 am on Saturday. The cause of the fire has not yet been ascertained.
After the fire started, the Bhiwandi fire team immediately reached the site. However, seeing the magnitude of the fire, they called for backup from the Kalyan and Thane fire departments, who are assisting with several water tankers.
Bhiwandi Fire Officer Rajesh Pawar said that the fire spread rapidly because plywood, footwear, and clothes were stored inside the building. “While extinguishing the fire, one of our employees, named Wagh, suffered minor injuries,” he said.
The fire department suspects the cause may have been a short circuit, as the godown was closed when the fire broke out during the night.
