A wild beaver has been filmed on a nature reserve but nobody is sure where it came from or how it got there.
Cameras were set up at Pensthorpe Natural Park near Fakenham in Norfolk to confirm suspicions about what had caused damage to a tree.
Reserve manager Richard Spowage said “It’s pretty amazing. It’s a crazy situation because there are no beavers in Norfolk. There are a couple of beaver compounds where beavers are held but, as far as we know, no beavers have left those lately.
“The fact it has chosen our land to establish a territory reflects the ongoing work we have been doing to improve our river and surrounding land for nature.”
Beavers became extinct in Britain in the 16th Century due to overhunting, and while some have been reintroduced to some protected areas, this one is thought to be the first wild beaver in Norfolk for centuries.
