A professional footballer was injured during the stabbing attack on a London-bound train on Saturday evening.

Scunthorpe United player Jonathan Gjoshe “sustained non-life-threatening injuries as a result of the attack”, the club said.

He was slashed across the bicep and had an operation in hospital, where he remains, the club told the BBC.

A man has been charged after 11 people were injured during the attack in Huntingdon.

In a statement, the National League side said: “Everyone at the club, from the board, management and his team-mates, along with all staff behind the scenes, sends our heartfelt well wishes to Jonathan for a full recovery, which is also extended to all the victims on board the train.”

The Iron manager Andy Butler described it as “an awful thing to happen”.

“It hits close to home it really does,” he said.

“The club will back him every step of the way in terms of recovery.

“We just hope Jonathan feels OK.”

Passengers travelling from Doncaster to London on an LNER service were attacked in a mass stabbing.

Eleven people received treatment in hospital following the attack. One – a member of the train staff – is in a “critical but stable condition”.

Anthony Williams, 32, of no fixed address, appeared at Peterborough Magistrates’ Court on Monday charged with 10 counts of attempted murder, one count of actual bodily harm and one count of possession of a bladed article.

He was remanded in custody and will appear before Cambridge Crown Court on 1 December.
