CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu govt has granted in-principle approval for a new Chennai Metro Rail corridor connecting Koyambedu to Pattabiram (Outer Ring Road).
The 21.76km stretch, estimated to cost ₹9,928.33 crore at 2025 prices, will include three flyovers and 19 stations along the route. This includes Ambattur Estate, Dunlop, OT, Thirumullaivoyal, Avadi, Hindu College and Pattabiram.
According to the government order issued by the state special initiatives department, the detailed project report (DPR) submitted by Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), extending the corridor beyond Avadi up to Pattabiram to cover major points like the Outer Ring Road and the ELCOT facility at Pattabiram, has been accepted on April 28.
The project will seek funding through a combination of equity support from the Union govt and external loan assistance from bilateral or multilateral agencies.
The Rs 9,928.33 crore estimate also includes a highways component of Rs 464 crore towards the construction of the three flyovers required for seamless integration with the city’s traffic network.
Earlier, the government had permitted CMRL to prepare a detailed feasibility report and DPR for a Koyambedu-Avadi link. Following detailed studies, the plan was expanded to extend up to Pattabiram to enhance regional connectivity and support the fast-developing western suburbs.
The state govt has now recommended the DPR to the Centre for final approval and funding arrangements.
